Tropical Hilltop Garden
This group of houses is set on top of a hill in the Wye Valley with stunning views out over the surrounding countryside. The owners had renovated the farmhouse and were in the process of turning the outbuildings into two holiday cottages.
They had created an amazing courtyard space, which needed a focal point;
inspired by their existing wonderful specimen palms;
plus a sitting out area for their own house, instead of the unattractive concrete shelf;

and some advice on patio spaces for each of the two cottages;
A central planter was created using stone to match in with the cottage walls and planting with some stunning cordylines;
and a patio was created outside the house back door;
Their existing palms were repotted and left in place to provide privacy;
A patio was built out with inbuilt seating area to cover up a stubborn tree stump …
while the rear cottage patio featured a stunning palm in a pot surrounded by a low box hedge;
and a series of standard bays round each front door;
We used a combination of tropical and topiary, very much inspired by the client, which I think worked really well here to give a sleek, simple yet stunning group of outdoor spaces. The topiary and exotic planting give continuity between all three spaces, yet each one has its own unique character.
